About Alun…
Former Principal of Chetham’s School of Music, Manchester and St Gabriel’s, Newbury, Alun retired in 2020 after 20 years of Headship. As a leader, musician and educationalist, Alun has enjoyed National and International facing roles which have included a term as Chair of Inspections (GSA) and Trustee to the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate (ISI). Alun was elected President of the Girls Schools’ Association (GSA) in 2015-16, the first male to be chosen for the role.
Currently a Governor to King Edward VI School, Southampton, Alun has served in a number of Non-Exec roles in both Independent and Maintained School sectors and chaired the Head’s Appointment Panel for a West Berkshire Primary School.
A former choral scholar and ad-hoc member of the BBC Singers, Alun trained as a singer and conductor at the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama where he won the Pernod Arts Award. He went on to win further awards and prizes from The Welsh Arts Council and Henry and Lily Davies fund administered by the Arts Council of Great Britain.
During a portfolio career as a musician, Alun began his career in education as Director of Vocal Studies at The Cathedral School, Llandaff, Cardiff, and the United World College of the Atlantic. Following positions as Music Master & Choirmaster, Director of Studies and Deputy Headmaster, Alun was appointed Principal at St Gabriel’s, Newbury in 2001, where he remained for 15 years before being asked to lead Chetham’s, the world renowned, and UKs foremost, specialist school of music which attracts talented young musicians from all over the world.
Alun now uses his in-depth knowledge of the education sector together with his extensive experience as a successful inspector, leader and musician to support schools seeking musical excellence to bring about the changes they desire. Alongside his current role as Director of Foundation and International Education Development for a major girls’ boarding school in the UK, Alun supports schools develop outstanding, creative leadership & management and vibrant music departments.
